Green vs Gold Conference The Green vs Gold Conference

The 'Green vs Gold' conference was held in Dumfries on 20th November 2012. The conference highlighted some of the successes and lessons learnt from Smart Choices, Smarter Places initiatives across Scotland, including GoSmart Dumfries.

The Key Note address was given by Keith Brown MSP, Minister for Transport and Veterans.

Presentations were given by powerpoint icon George Vincent of Glasgow City Council [4Mb]powerpoint icon Martin Higgot and Nicola Scott from JMP Consultancy [11Mb] (former members of Dumfries' and Lockerbie's own Personalised Travel Planning Team), powerpoint icon Fiona MacDonald of East Renfrewshire Council [8Mb] to discuss Healthy Weight Communities projects, powerpoint icon Crawford McGhie of East Dunbartonshire [8Mb] looking at the future of Smarter Places and powerpoint icon Derek Halden of Derek Halden Consultancy [3Mb] who analysed the impacts of each of the SCSP projects (results to come).

All 51 delegates participated in group breakout sessions and a panel discussion.

The day was also an opportunity to launch the new car club for Dumfries. Car clubs give people a safer, cleaner and greener way to access cars when they need them.

Brian Collins, Chair of SWestrans said:
"The conference was a good opportunity to share knowledge, learning and experience. It was reassuring to know that delegates felt that interest in sustainability is still increasing as people are recognising that small lifestyle changes can help the environment, but also save money.
Our region has gained national recognition by hosting this conference. Dumfries has been leading the way in sustainable travel over the last four years implementing many projects aimed at getting people out of their cars and using new cycle paths and new buses."

Other feedback from delegates included comments such as "It provides good insight into the conflicting challenges of promoting sustainable travel in urban and rural areas. " and "Good to get a different perspective via health and other SCSP projects."

Overall, the conference has been hailed as a roaring success by both organisers and attendees alike!

Bike Polite
Spokes

Bike Polite is an initiative by the cycle campaign group Spokes who have been promoting considerate cycling.

Ian Maxwell of Spokes says that:
"Although the vast majority of cyclists behave properly, we do receive complaints about the reckless or selfish behaviour of some cyclists."

They encourage cyclists to slow down and ring a bell to warn pedestrians on shared paths, stop at red traffic lights and make sure you are visible at all times.

With more cyclists taking to the road in Dumfries, GoSmart also asks for considerate cycling when you are going smart!

Big Red Bus GoSmart Lockerbie Launch Event

A launch event for GoSmart Lockerbie was held on Saturday the 29th October at Tesco in Lockerbie. The double-decker 'big red bus' housed the GoSmart travel advice team, the Energy Savings Trust Scotland, the CTC and Annandale Transport Initiative who all had stalls giving advice and information. The brilliant 7 Stanes cycle stunt display team were also there to entertain the shoppers.

Residents of Lockerbie and passing shoppers received a variety of advice and free resources informing them of how they can GoSmart by choosing to use the bus, car share, walk or cycle when they can. There were also a number of interesting challenges taken up by participants at the event encouraging them to get more active or try out a new sustainable travel mode, ranging from increasing bus use to walking the wheelie bin to the end of the farm road instead of taking the car!

Chairman of SWestrans Councillor Brian Collins said:
"I am very pleased to see the extension of GoSmart to Lockerbie so that even more people in the region can benefit from the free service that is offered to encourage more sustainable travel. With fantastic cycling resources in our area such as the 7 Stanes mountain biking trails it is good to promote more active forms of travel which encourage people to get out and get fitter. After the success of GoSmart in Dumfries, I am sure that residents of Lockerbie and the surrounding area will benefit greatly from the GoSmart project"

If you missed out at the launch event, don't worry as the GoSmart Lockerbie team will be at a range of other events around the town and are always available to come and speak to your group or organisation. Keep an eye on the Whats Happening section of this website to see what events are happening near you.
